What Type Of Fabric Makes Vale Forever Shirt So Soft
Actually, I followed a friend's advice to buy a Vale Forever shirt and the first thing I noticed was not the color, nor the fit. It was the feel of the fabric that I pulled out of the bag. Not that new shirt stiff feeling that most new shirts have. Except it was brand new, something closer to a shirt that's already been through twenty washings and broken in properly, anyway.
Cotton is doing most of the work here
The shirt's material is a major factor in its feel, so much so that cotton is a large part of it, and the packaging is used for its protection. At higher percentages, the softness of cotton is a natural quality that cannot be valeforeverr.us synthetically at the same price point, regardless how it is marketed. Not only is the percentage of cotton important, but the type of cotton is also important. Long-staple cotton varieties yield fabric that is smoother and softer than shorter-staple cotton, because the longer the fibers the fewer fiber ends will be exposed on the fabric surface. The rough texture that is given to cheaper cotton shirts is from those exposed ends.
What Ring-Spun Cotton Does
The ring spun cotton is found in several clothing labels without much information attached to it about what it means to the wearer. The spinning process also spins the cotton fibres together more tightly than conventional carding, resulting in a finer, sturdier yarn that is smoother on the surface. The smoother the yarn is, the more smooth the fabric will be after it is woven or knitted into a shirt. On paper, Vale Forever shirts are lighter by the weight of the fabric, but they do feel softer than an average cotton shirt for a few reasons.
Fabric Weight and Softness
There is a difference between weight and softness, and they interplay in a way that is important in regards to the actual feel of a shirt. Cotton is very lightweight and may start soft, but becomes less soft after a few washings because the fibers are agitated many times in the washing machine. The mid weight fabric is a perfect compromise between retaining its shape after repeated washability, and allowing it to breathe against the skin. The reason is that there is more fiber density to provide surface texture, which makes it stay soft longer than very lightweight cotton alternatives within that range of weight.
Characteristics of the knit structure and how it affects the feel
The process of knitting yarns into fabric affects the feel of the knitted fabric, independently of the yarn itself. Most t-shirts are made with jersey knit, which allows for a knit smooth surface with a different texture on the back. This knit is tight enough that it drapes and feels different when in motion.Vale Forever's knit is tight enough to feel substantial, but not restricting, allowing the shirt tomove with the body, not against. Loose knits are softer at first, but tend to pill and lose more structure over time, whereas tight knits are slightly stiff and not as soft over time.
Everyday science doesn't make much sense. Why washing makes the most of it soften
Light stiffening agents used to facilitate the movement of the cotton through the machines during manufacturing, are used in the manufacture of new cotton shirts. These disperse over several washes and will soften after washing the first few times, unlike cotton shirts that will not change in texture after washing.Vale Forever shirts are no exception, they grow soft after the third or fourth wash, but don't get any softer. That is a more stable point than cheaper cotton blends are able to achieve, partly due to the long-staple cotton but also the ring-spun construction that stands up to repeated washings.
The use of heavy synthetic blends is avoided by Vale Forever because it is non-renewable
The inclusion of polyester in the cotton shirt also lowers the manufacturing cost, but it also raises the wrinkle resistance, with drawbacks in feel that are more apparent with use over time. Polyester is not as breathable as cotton is, is a bit more slippery in hot weather and has a more permanent odor after repeated use than cotton.Though the synthetic content is kept low to avoid the slight slickness found in some heavier polyester blends, that is its only drawback. This option is more expensive with the materials but will maintain a natural feel to make the shirt worth picking up when it's hot.
Over time what happens to the fabric
Long-staple, ring-spun cotton wears differently than regular cotton when washed and worn over a long period. The fibers are also twisted tightly, which means that the fibers on the fabric surface don't pill like they do on other shirts, which develop that fuzzy texture that makes them look older than they are.Higher-quality cotton is also more resistant to fading, since the dye penetrates the fibers differently than with lower-quality cotton. That's why it's no surprise that Vale Forever shirts retain more of their original colour after a year's use compared with less expensive shirts after three months.
Is it worth the money to buy the fabric with high quality
In the number of shirts I wear, and the care I take to ensure that they last by the yard, the quality of the fabric at this level of construction is a pretty good value for the price difference over a cheaper version. A soft, spill resistant and color fast shirt for two years is cheaper per wear than a cheaper shirt replaced every six months.
